Trail Work day #4

Trail work on June 29, 9 AM – 1 PM. This will be another chainsaw day as we continue clearing the contractor lines (#1 and #2 on posted map). We’ll need 10-12 swampers. We may be working with some hand tools as well depending on the area we are clearing. We’ll provide tools. If you can make it out, let us know as we are trying to get sense of how many people we’ll have (fredericktrails AT gmail DOT com or rsvp at https://www.facebook.com/events/333758623972537/). Just know you’ll work hard and get dirty as we continue working on the new trails in the southern Watershed.

1 1/2 mile hike in to the work site. Or, if you can carry what you need, ride down on your bike for quicker access. Long pants, boots, gloves, and safety glasses are what you should have for this work day. Plus water and bug spray might not be bad either.

Meeting location is the Stoner Rd parking area on Gambrill Park Rd, just south of Hamburg Rd. This is where the newish trail called Killer Bee is located. https://goo.gl/maps/zuVPytNkw4omGkAG9

Want to donate to the project? Go here and put a note in the donation that it is for the Watershed trail projects https://more-mtb.org/collections/maryland-trails/products/frederick-watershed

Thanks for the support!

Annual Watershed Clean Up Day

April 28th at 9 a.m. is our annual watershed volunteer cleanup day. Please note that everyone is required to sign a waiver on the work day and minors must have a parent/guardian sign for them, as well as be accompanied by an adult.

We are picking up trash and you might get dirty, so dress for success! Last year we collected almost 2 tons of trash. See you on April 28th!

Our awesome local sponsors are The Trail HouseThe Bicycle EscapeBike Doctor FrederickWegmans Frederick and Attaboy Beer – support those who support the Watershed! There will be give-aways from sponsors plus a $.01 beer from Attaboy Beer afterwards (at the brewery) if you are 21 years or older!

Start location is 6010 Mountaindale Rd, Thurmont, MD 21788 on April 28th at 9 a.m.

South Watershed Trail Project
We have a lot more work planned for 2019, so stay tuned. We have a Recreation Trails Program grant that we are working to spend on some cool new trail. Spending grant money comes with a lot of hoops to jump through and a bunch of paperwork, so it doesn’t happen fast, but we are finalizing this upfront work as I type this. We went for a walk in the woods last week with the local Recreational Trails Program manager who is overseeing our grant for the upcoming project and it went really well. We’ve been trying not to crank up the hype machine because these things can progress at a slow pace, but we are really close to digging in the dirt. We’ll be announcing workdays soon, stay tuned.

The only bad news was in the last week and a half, someone removed 1.5 miles of our flagging tape, lines we just refreshed for the site visit which means we’ve got to go back out and reflag some lines. If you see anyone removing flagging tape or if you have questions about if flagging tape is authorized, please reach out to us and we can provide info. Thanks.

Donate to the Trails
If you are looking for a place to donate and want to contribute to the Frederick Watershed Trails, click this link to donate directly to Frederick Watershed trail projects. If you do that, it will go into the pool of funds we have for buying tools, supplies, materials and other things related to watershed trail work. Or, you can just donate to MORE in general where the love will be spread around to area trails. We are part of MORE, which is a 501c (3) non-profit performing volunteer work on multi-user trails and representing thousands of area mountain bikers. Every bit helps. Thanks again for your volunteer hours and donations!

Spring Turkey Hunting Season
Spring Turkey season has has started and runs from 4/18/19 – 5/23/19.

  • Unless otherwise noted, hunting is allowed in all areas of the forest.
  • Wearing blaze orange during hunting season is always a good idea. Avoid wearing white during deer season.
  • There is no Sunday hunting allowed in the Watershed.  For a full list of hunting dates and related information, visit the Maryland DNR website.
